This is Santa Cruz’ wonderful interpretation of the iconic slope shouldered guitars such as the Gibson J-45 or Epiphone Texan. It combines the essence of coolness possessed by its forbearers but with built-in improvements from SCGCs decades of lutherie.
The VJs Sitka Spruce top is braced and voiced for volume and the body is built with premium Mahogany for clarity of tone. The balance favors the bass to the degree found in the originals, but what it has over its predecessors is SCGCs hallmark complexity of overtones, sustain and power. So while inspired by its predecessors, this beautiful guitar is infused with the characteristic Santa Cruz volume, balance and richness, dripping with the kind of deep, rich bass and sweet trebles that really shine in chord-oriented work. It is a guitar that can cover a lot of different styles from blues to folk and rock and it will be a satisfaction and joy to play in each.
This guitar is “custom” because we got it with an optional Adirondack Spruce top, and to show off the lovely grain of the Adirondack, instead of covering it with a dark sunburst finish, it has a beautiful mild antique honey-burst.
