The Newport bass is the Epiphone counterpart to the Gibson EB-0. This model was introduced in 1961, just a few years after Gibson had purchased Epiphone in 1957. At the time, both brands were being made side by side in the Kalamazoo, MI factory. Like the EB-0, it features a 30″ short scale neck and a “mudbucker” pickup. Where it differs from the Gibson is the mounting position of the tailpiece. On the Epiphone, it is right up against the end of the body, whereas on the Gibson, there is approximately two inches of space between the bridge and the edge of the body. This allows the instrument to feel more compact and balanced overall. Aesthetically, the Epiphone has a much softer, rounder appearance while the Gibson has the sharp horns and crisp lines.

The original black cover mudbucker pickup has a very deep bass response. It pairs perfectly with more modern amps which allow the thunderous low end to shine through without losing definition. This is also a great bass to play with a pick; you’ll get a more percussive tone while limiting the low end which allows it to be usable in more situations.

It is in very clean, all original condition with essentially no fading to the finish. The red aniline dyes Gibson used at the time were notorious for bleaching out when exposed to sunlight. There is almost no playwear with the exception of just a little buckle rash on the back. It was very lovingly played and cared for by the previous owner. It is currently set up with flatwound strings and plays perfectly up the neck with very low action. It even comes with the original case, strap, and cable! Overall this is the best example of the rare Epiphone Newport I’ve ever come across.
