657ce Doce Doble
With its all-unison tuning and striking visual style inspired by Mexican musical traditions, the Taylor 657ce Doce Doble offers a unique experience for players wanting to explore the sound of a unison 12-string guitar.
Another instrument voicing commonly associated with different regional Mexican and other Latin music genres (including Norteo, Tejano and conjunto) is a modified, unison-strung 12-string guitar. Its sometimes referred to as a requinto-style setup or a Mexican 12-string, but it doesnt have a formal name, so Taylor is referring to this one as Doce Doble, which translates into double 12. It produces a bold and resonant double-course voice.
Traditionally, players wanting a unison 12-string would take a standard-strung 12-string guitar and then have it modified by a luthier typically with bridge reinforcements needed to support the added string tension but in this case, the strength and stabilityof Taylor’s own V-Class bracing architecture parallel to the strings eliminates the need for further modification.
That structural integrity, together with the other tonal enhancements of V-Class and Taylor’s signature playability, make the 657ce Doce Doble a fantastic plug-and-play option for players looking to explore the sonic flavors of a unison 12-string guitar. Because thetuning is accessible to all players, we think it will have broad appeal to a wide variety of musicians.
Similar to its 657ce Bajo Quinto counterpart, the Doce Doble features a solid maple/spruce Grand Pacific body with a Florentine-style cutaway, along with a comparable appointment package: white binding around the body, fretboard and peghead, a single-ring green abalone rosette with black and white purfling, mother-of-pearl and grained ivoroid Mission inlays, a white pearloid truss rod cover, ebony bridgepins with green abalone dots, and gold Taylor minituners.
Notable distinctions include a single white pearloid pickguard (instead of the double pickguard for the bajo quinto), DAddario XS coated phosphor bronze light-gauge strings (double 12 stringing) featuring our double-mounted string anchoring system fora more consistent voicing response, and Taylor ES2 electronics. The guitar ships in a Taylor deluxe hardshell Western Floral case.
Serial # 1205294062 (2024) – this guitar is on display and has been utilized for demos, but is still in great shape. It’s been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop.
